The United States of America spent its 245th birthday on Sunday assailed by doubts about its past, present, and future even as the nation founded on high ideals returned to near post-pandemic normalcy and celebrated its Independence Day with the usual binges — fireworks (mostly made in China), barbecues, and holiday travel.
